What to Expect

A beautiful, participatory service, at your own pace.

More and more people are finding spiritual renewal in the ancient practices of Christian worship. At St. Columba’s, our services are rooted in that tradition. If you’ve ever been to a Catholic or Orthodox service, much of what you see will feel familiar: vestments, singing and chanting, and the shared celebration of the Eucharist.

You’ll also notice that many parishioners worship with their whole bodies—standing, sitting, kneeling, bowing, or crossing themselves. We see these gestures as natural, embodied responses to the presence of God.

But nothing is required.
These practices are invitations, not expectations. Many people choose simply to sit, listen, and take it all in—and that is completely welcome.

An inclusive community

St. Columba’s is an inclusive church, welcoming people of all backgrounds, abilities, and identities, including LGBTQ+ persons. We understand this not as a departure from the Gospel, but as an expression of it.

Our altar is Jesus’s table, and all are welcome at Jesus’s table. We would not have it any other way.

 Children in worship

Children are always welcome in our services. Families have several options: children may sit with their parents, enjoy the children’s and family area in the sanctuary, or participate in a brief age-appropriate Bible study before returning later in the service.

You will also hear children being children. We love that. We take it as a sign of life—and of a church that is growing.

Worship Style

We provide multiple worship experiences, from traditional to a little more casual.

Reverence

You may notice movement by other worshipers. If you are new to a tradition that uses formal prayers and liturgy, we encourage you to participate as you feel comfortable, without any concern of “doing things correctly.”

Liturgy

Our Sunday Services are interactive, drawn from the liturgical framework of the Book of Common Prayer.

Guidance

Everything you need to know to fully participate will be provided to you in a detailed worship bulletin.

Communion

All are welcome to receive Communion. Those who do not desire communion can remain in their seats or come forward for a blessing.

Connect

During your visit, be sure to fill out a communication card in our book, and join us for our coffee hour in the parish hall after the service.
